A 4-year-old child has died following a crash on the Southern State Parkway involving a driver who fled the scene.

New York State Police say the incident happened on June 17 at 2 p.m. on the westbound side of the parkway, just west of Exit 20N.

According to investigators, a 31-year-old woman driving a Nissan Sentra attempted to avoid an unknown black vehicle. Police say she lost control, causing the car to leave the roadway, strike a tree, and come to rest in a wooded area with both the woman and child entrapped.

The other vehicle did not stop, and troopers are working to identify the vehicle and its driver.

The woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The 4-year-old child, who was initially listed in critical condition, later died from those injuries.

State police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 631-756-3300.
