It's nearly 1,000 miles away, but the runoff election in Georgia Tuesday will also directly affect us here in New York and Long Island.
If one or both of the Republican candidates win, the GOP will maintain the control of the U.S. Senate. If both Democrats win, Democrats will take control of the Senate. That would give them the Senate, the House and the White House this year.
Republicans argue that's a bad thing and that there should be a balance of power. But Democrats say a Democrat-controlled Washington would be good for New York.
"What's at stake? Clearly economic aid for New York. If Chuck Schumer becomes the majority leader, there's no question that he's an expert in delivering -- small bundles right now. But he'd have the capacity to deliver major batches of money to New York, like mass transit," says political analyst Jerry Kremer.
Schumer is currently the minority leader of the Senate. If Democrats take control, he would become the first New Yorker to hold the position of majority leader.
