Not even a thunderstorm could stop one of the nation’s largest Independence Day celebrations Thursday night at Eisenhower Park.

Thousands gathered at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre in East Meadow for Nassau County’s Fourth of July kickoff event — a stunning combination of fireworks and a cutting-edge drone show. Despite a powerful thunderstorm that forced a temporary evacuation, the crowd returned when skies cleared, determined not to miss the spectacle.

Those who stayed were rewarded not only with the fireworks and drone display, but also a vivid rainbow that appeared after the storm passed.

“We went back to the car in the middle of the heavy storm. It came down heavy,” said Joe Scortino, of Franklin Square.

Attendees like Adrienne Kerekes, of East Meadow, praised the show’s return after the storm delay. “The fireworks are the best and the drone show is A1,” she said.

The patriotic celebration also featured a performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner” and a military flyover — adding a stirring tribute to the night.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman emphasized the meaning behind the festivities.

“It’s a time to remember that we’re all Americans and celebrate the anniversary of our country," he said.

Van Scatliffe, a Queens resident, reflected on the sacrifices behind the holiday.

“Freedom is not for free. If it wasn’t for the veterans, we wouldn’t be here," he said.

For those who missed the event, Long Island’s Fourth of July celebrations continue Friday with more fireworks displays scheduled at Jones Beach and at Bald Hill in the Town of Brookhaven.
