Some Hofstra University students say they?re upset that they learned about Sunday?s alleged on-campus rape solely from the media and Facebook.
Four men are accused of luring an 18-year-old girl into a dorm room and sexually assaulting her. One other suspect is sought.
Many students say the university should have notified them immediately through text message alert. Students weren't officially told of the incident for 36 hours via a message on Hofstra?s internal Internet home page.
Vice President of University Relations Melissa Connolly says text alerts are used when there is an imminent threat on campus. Connolly says school safety officials and police determined text alerts were not warranted at the time.
Hofstra University has increased campus patrols and is holding meetings for concerned students. Police say a fifth arrest is expected soon.
