One day after 4 inches of water poured down in three hours, Long Island started drying out Friday.
Storm drains in Valley Stream couldn't handle the large amount of rain that fell in such a short amount of time. Crews worked Friday to clear out the drains.
"There isn't any system in the world that you could economically prepare for that, that would take that kind of rain in such a short period of time," said Nick Camarano of Valley Stream Public Works.
The Long Island Rail Road was hit hard by the storm. Service on South Shore trains was suspended after a lightning strike affected power to the third rail. The LIRR also suspended service on the main line due to flooding in Mineola.
"We are working with local municipalities and with the city's DEP to try and find a solution to find out what is causing the flooding," LIRR spokesperson Susan McGowan said.
The LIRR said portable pumps placed along the tracks in response to summer flooding are more of a short-term solution.
