Hempstead Town is calling on Nassau to stop using a motel in Island Park as housing for Department of Social Services clients.
Town officials say the Plantation Motel has too much crime, too many drugs and too many medical emergencies.
They sent a letter to the commissioner of Nassau's Department of Social Services asking him to disqualify the motel and stop placing county clients there.
"We are fed up with this situation at the Plantation Motel and its impact on the neighborhood," says Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino.
The manager of the Plantation Motel told News 12 that he's just trying to help the homeless.
Nassau Department of Social Services says the department discourages use of motels, but that "in certain situations motels and hotels are used, particularly when shelters are unavailable or there are individual and family needs or medical needs which cannot be met in another type of housing."
Queen Ton-Ja-Ra, a Social Services recipient, says it's easy to blame the homeless who are living there, but she says they don't deserve it.
"You're not allowed to blame us for your crime and for your misfortune," she says.
Hempstead Town officials say they don't place any of their Section 8 housing clients at the Plantation Motel, because they claim it doesn't meet federal housing requirements.
