The Gianna Center, a fertility clinic created by Catholic Health Services, opened Tuesday in Babylon. 

Catholic Health Services says the facility will provide families with restorative reproductive medicine in accordance to Catholic teachings.

"The restorative approach is to figure out what's wrong, what's causing the infertility. Infertility is a symptom, not a diagnosis," says Dr. Paul Carpentier. 

Dr. Carpentier says some common underlying issues preventing pregnancy include polycystic ovary, thyroid and pituitary problems and endometriosis. He says in vitro fertilization, which is against Catholic teachings, isn't always the answer.

"The prematurity rate of the babies conceived in the IVF Center was 31 percent because they didn't figure out the underlying process that was going wrong," says Carpentier. "We brought the prematurity rate to 6 percent."

Dr. Carpentier says the Gianna Center's approach can't help all infertile couples, but he says the center has been able to help over 50 percent of couples achieve a pregnancy by treating the underlying disorder.

Doctors say they have women coming from Connecticut, Massachusetts and Tennessee for treatment.
