Tearful family members and military members gathered at MacArthur airport Sunday to welcome home a Greenlawn soldier who died overseas.Army Sgt. Anthony Mangano's body arrived in a flag-draped coffin. The 36-year-old was killed last Saturday in an ambush in Afghanistan. Mangano answered the call to duty not once, but twice. He first served in the National Guard in 1991. He re-enlisted last year to fight in the war on terror.
Mangano's relatives were too overwhelmed with grief to speak Sunday, but his mother spoke to News 12 Long Island earlier in the week.
"He loved his country and he wanted to do something, not just talk about it," said Constance Mangano.
The soldier also leaves behind his bride of six months, Tatiana. He will be buried Monday at Long Island National Cemetery.
