A FedEx truck loaded with packages was stolen earlier this week in a shocking incident on Broadway in Massapequa.
Nassau County police are investigating the crime, which happened on Monday evening around 7 p.m. outside an office building near a FedEx drop box.
According to authorities, the truck driver was approached by the thief while making a routine pickup. The suspect reportedly ordered the driver out of the vehicle before stealing the truck.
The driver ran into a nearby smoke shop for help.
“I think that’s horrible,” said Rose Niola, of Massapequa. “The nerve of people to take a whole truck—that’s ridiculous.”
Harry Mehta, the owner of the smoke shop, was one of the first to encounter the driver after the theft. “He’s coming inside and whole FedEx truck, somebody’s robbery. I don’t know I’m shocked a little bit,” Mehta recalled.
Nassau police later found the truck abandoned about half a mile away. While some items had been stolen from the truck, the full extent of the loss remains unclear. Authorities are still working to determine which packages were taken and how much the stolen goods are worth.
David Sarni, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, suggested that the theft was likely premeditated.
“It has to be somewhat organized,” he explained. “Because they take that vehicle and bring it to another location. And then they have to take whatever products out of that car or truck and get it someplace quickly.”
FedEx issued the following statement confirming the theft:
“We are aware of the incident and are cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation,” a FedEx spokesperson said.
As of now, no arrests have been made.
