Nearly 40 dogs are up for foster care at the North Fork Animal Welfare League.
The organization says the pups were rescued after they were neglected and abused.
Animal advocates say the Maltese-Yorkie mixes are still alive and well, thanks to a good Samaritan who spoke up. They are urging others to do the same.
