The Department of Transportation has completed 3 miles of new bus lanes along East Gun Hill Road, one of the Bronx's most dangerous roads.
The efforts are part of the East Gun Hill Road Bus Priority and Safety project which is aimed at making the road safer and easier to travel on.
The new bus lanes service the Bx28 and Bx38 bus routes stretching from Bainbridge Avenue to Bartow Road. In total, the DOT says this will serve 40,000 daily riders.
Along with the new bus lanes, the DOT says they also redesigned around 25 intersections by adding new safety improvements.
The lanes will also improve access to nearby commercial hubs like The Mall at Bay Plaza and necessities like Montefiore and North Central Bronx hospitals.
"This holistic redesign makes East Gun Hill Road both safer and more efficient by prioritizing bus speeds for 40,000 daily riders and redesigning more than two dozen intersections," said NYC DOT Commissioner Rodriguez. "This administration is committed to equity, and this life-saving project is one of many we’re installing this year for Bronxites, who deserve reliable commutes and safe streets. We thank the MTA for their close partnership and Mayor Adams for his support.”
The DOT also has plans to add cameras to the streets in the near future to ensure cars don't enter the lanes illegally.
