Crews began demolition today at the old Kings Park Psychiatric Center.
The crews will be demolishing 18 buildings on the campus, starting with a century-old dining hall. The facility housed thousands of patients until the institution was closed in 1996.
Residents living nearby say it is bittersweet to see the historic building torn down, but are glad to see the site being cleaned up.
Lucy Weiner, a former patient who produced a documentary film about Kings Park, says she wants to see part of it preserved to remind people of the failures of the mental health care system.
