The Nassau County District Attorney's Office says that a Hempstead woman was arrested Thursday after she left a bloody, injured dog outside of a clinic earlier this week.
Prosecutors say Tamara Copeland, 56, has been charged with misdemeanor animal neglect and misdemeanor abandonment of animals. According to police, Copeland dropped an abused dog named "Nino" outside Hempstead Animal Hospital on Main Street.
As News 12 has reported, surveillance video showed two women walking along Main Street on Tuesday. A woman wearing orange can be seen leaving a package outside the clinic.
At Copeland's arraignment Thursday, her daughter and niece told News 12 that the 15-year-old poodle mix doesn't belong to her, but they declined to comment on the charges.
Nassau Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas says Nino was actually stolen from her rightful owner two years ago, right out of a backyard in Uniondale.
Copeland was not charged in relation to that incident. The dog is expected to recover, and will be reunited with her original owner.
Copeland is due back in court Oct. 19.
