Nassau County legislators asked plenty of questions about county cars at a budget hearing Tuesday, and weren't altogether pleased with the answers.
Select employees are able to take home 341 of the 1,000 county cars. The remainder are used during the workday and left on county property overnight. Executive Tom Suozzi (D-Nassau) recently took take-home cars away from 35 officials he deemed didn't need them.
Officials at the budget hearing acknowledged the cost of those 341 cars is difficult to calculate. The current system is unable to calculate the amount of miles and gas employees use, which concerns Legis. Lisanne Altman (D-Great Neck).
"We really shouldn't have people taking cars home unless it's absolutely necessary," Altman said.
Many of the other take-home vehicles are guaranteed in union contracts, which means the county cannot take them away as easily as Suozzi did.
CSEA president Jerry Laricchiuta said it's something the union will consider. "It's on the table for negotiations," Laricchiuta said. "If they're going to bring it up, I'm certainly going to listen."
