Police are looking into whether the vandalism of a Holocaust display at Suffolk Community College Tuesday night was a hate crime.
The display case by the Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity and Human Understanding contained framed reproductions of Nazi paraphernalia as well as a picture of an original copy of ?Mein Kampf.? The glass was removed from the case, items were removed and found smashed behind the sports center at the Brentwood campus.
Originals of some of the items are on display at the college?s Selden campus. The reproductions had been in the Brentwood display case for three years. Police say they are not sure if the act was anti-Semitic or anti-Nazi.
The hate crime unit is handling the case. However, police say they are not jumping to conclusions as to whether the incident is a hate crime.
Police say the items were taken sometime between 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. They are reviewing footage from security cameras inside and outside the building. Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
