Community survey gives Nassau PD grade of B+
A new survey has given the Nassau County Police Department a grade of B+, but critics are questioning the sample size.
The Siena College poll sampled 454 people. A total of 82 percent said that Nassau police and the community work well together, and 70 percent said it's uncommon to see police targeting citizens based on gender, race or ethnicity.
Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter called the results "very favorable," but says there's always room for improvement. He says that last year, his officers went through courses on ethics and use of force, and says such training will continue.
However, some are questioning the poll's accuracy. Political analyst Larry Levy works with the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, which does national polling. He says the poll asked only 454 Nassau residents for their views, only 10 percent of whom were African-American.
"It would have been more reliable, more accurate if they sampled more members of minority groups," Levy says. "As it stands, only 45 African-Americans were interviewed out of 450, which is a relatively small sample."
Retired NYPD officer Dennis Jones is a member of the Law Enforcement Alliance, which he says helps bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community. Jones says he doesn't feel the survey results are accurate, and says more needs to be done to improve the relationship between minorities and police.
