CNN: Rep. George Santos strikes deal in Brazil fraud case
Brazilian prosecutors have taken a deal with Rep. George Santos (R-3rd District) in a fraud case dating back to 2008, according to a CNN report.
Santos’ attorney reportedly put up a deal where Santos would confess to the crime, which involves defrauding a clerk of over $1,000 in clothes. Santos would also reportedly pay the damages.
CNN reported that the petition for the deal was filed earlier this year and sought the agreement instead of going to trial because Santos is “now gainfully employed and re-socialized.”
A memo requested the defense attorneys for assurance that the victim could be contacted for the repayment, according to the report.
Santos did not comment on the case when asked by CNN.
Santos has refused to step down from his role as representative in Congress amid multiple allegations of lies involving his background, education and family history.
