Workers at the Coral House catering hall in Baldwin are attempting to ring in the New Year by setting the world record for most champagne bottles opened in one minute.
They will be using the centuries-old technique of sabering, which involves opening a champagne bottle with a saber or sword. The Dover Group President Butch Yamali says sabering goes back to the days of Napoleon.
Coral House Manager Frank Esposito adds that in times of victory, the champagne would be sabered. Esposito says that he organized 396 glasses into a pyramid, and will pour the champagne onto it after bottles are sabered.
