Dozens of Juniors and Explorers from fire departments across Long Island are came together for training at Camp Fahrenheit 516.
Across the state of New York, many fire departments are facing recruitment challenges, including on Long Island.
With call volumes up for fire, safety and EMS, the need for more volunteers is crucial, officials say.
According to officials, one way to ensure members for the future is to invest in junior firefighters, those under the age of 18 who are interested in future opportunities in becoming a volunteer firefighter once they are of age to service their community.
Nearly 45  “Juniors” and “Explorers” aged 12-18 from several fire departments across Nassau and Suffolk counties are participating in Camp Fahrenheit 516, which is sponsored by the Firefighters Association of the State of New York.
