Brooklyn College professor: Regents exams will be optional by 2030

A Brooklyn College professor says Regents exams will be optional by 2030 as New York state moves toward more career-oriented pathways.

The state’s Education Department proposed the plan in June, saying that the exams would no longer be a requirement to graduate from high school. It said the shift was being made to promote equity in education by removing the emphasis on a single test and giving students multiple ways to demonstrate their knowledge in a specific subject.
On Monday, the Education Department announced “NY Inspires” – a plan that would ‘transform education in the state.
"The Board of Regents is firmly committed to the belief that all students deserve meaningful, rigorous, and inclusive learning opportunities in school,” said Board of Regents Chancellor Lester Young Jr. in prepared remarks. “We are equally dedicated to empowering all students to showcase their knowledge and skills in diverse and significant ways.
