The man accused of secretly recording patients in bathrooms at a health care facility has admitted to doing it. But his expected sentence isn’t sitting well with many.
Former Northwell sleep technician
Sanjai Syamaprasad admitted he secretly recording patients in bathrooms at one of their sleep and rehab centers.
The man recorded hundreds of others, including children, prosecutors say.
Judge Meryl Berkowitz said she will be giving the defendant give years’ probation, but no jail time. Sentencing will occur in September.
Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly isn’t happy with the promise of five years’ probation.
“What he did, the number of people he exposed, over 300-plus videos we have, and you treat that with probation? I think it's wrong and that's why I was recommending upstate jail time,” says Donnelly.
The DA says the hidden camera Syamaprasad used was made to look like a smoke detector. Prosecutors say he filmed at bathrooms at the Northwell Health Sleep Disorders Center in Great Neck and in a bathroom at STARS Rehabilitation Center in the same building.
The incidents happened between July 2023 and April 2024.
Brenda Pellettieri believes she is one of his victims.
“’It’s something that I think about every single day, it's really destroyed my faith in humanity, you don't trust people,” says Pellettieri.
Northwell Health officials say they were disturbed when they learned about the conduct of the former employee. They say his conduct was promptly reported to the DA’s office and revoked his access to the premises.
