Lindenhurst residents say they are angry, heartbroken and confused after several nests belonging to green monk parakeets were destroyed Tuesday.
Pictures show at least a dozen dead baby birds and eggs found either on the ground or in the garbage.
Caitlin Lefferts says she was horrified when she saw workers taking down nests Tuesday.
"There were babies that were flung, their necks snapped on the cement over there," says Lefferts. "Babies under the tree, babies on the field."
According to the Village of Lindenhurst administrator, the nests were removed from light poles at a baseball field by a contractor as part of a project to install more environmentally friendly lights.
The administrator posted a message to the village's website that says, "We have reported the matter to the proper authorities for a full investigation. We have also demanded a complete report from the responsible contractor. We are deeply troubled by this incident."
Parrot expert Marc Morrone says the contractor and the village had several options when it comes to safely removing the nests. Morrone says they could have contacted a rescue group or simply waited until winter.
"Every person on planet Earth knows birds make nests to have babies in," says Morrone, of Parrots of the World. "So if you see nests in the summertime most likely there's going to be baby birds there."
A handful of the birds were rescued, but residents say none should have been killed in the first place.
