A federal judge denied bail for a Muttontown couple accused of slave labor Monday.
Prosecutors had argued Varsha and Mahender Sabhnani would be a flight risk due to their international ties, while the judge had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the terms of the couple's house arrest security.
The Sabhnanis' attorney, meanwhile, had argued that their family, business and entire life is in the area, and they would have followed the terms of the bail agreement. The Sabhnanis, who operate a worldwide perfume business out of their multimillion-dollar home, are accused of keeping two Indonesian women as slaves. The couple was arrested May 13 after one of the women was found wandering outside a nearby doughnut shop. She apparently had escaped the night before when she was putting out the trash, prosecutors said. The Sabhnanis are charged with two counts of forced labor and two counts of harboring illegal residents. Lawyers for the couple have insisted the women were not abused or held against their will.
