Assembly candidate says anonymous mailers are ‘dirty politics’

Taylor Raynor, an Assembly candidate from Nassau who is challenging 30-year incumbent Earlene Hooper in the Democratic primary, says a political mailer that targets her is “dirty politics.”

The letter contains various spelling and grammatical errors, but its author does not mince words. It reads in part, “Taylor Rayner is NOT a Democrat and only pretends to be one for this race."

It goes on to call Raynor a "loose jezebel that has two kids and no husband." It ends by telling voters to "vote against fake Democrat and fake Christian Rayner. Jesus sees your vote."

“I thought that children and families were off limits in politics, but I learned that a lot of things happen in politics,” Raynor told News 12.

Another piece of campaign literature depicts Raynor as a puppet of Nassau Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs. The party is backing Raynor over Hooper.

The political ads do not say who paid for the flyers or where they came from.

News 12 has reported that Hooper came under fire for comparing Jacobs to a plantation owner and Raynor to a slave. Her campaign insists that it has nothing to do with these latest mailers. Raynor is skeptical.

Hooper is the deputy speaker of the Assembly – one of its highest ranking members.

News 12 reached out to the longtime lawmaker, but was told she was unavailable. A spokesperson insisted that the Hooper campaign is not affiliated with these mailers in any way.
