(AP) Health officials have issued an advisory against swimming at 47 beaches in Suffolk County due to elevated bacteria levels caused by heavy rains.
The advisory was issued Wednesday. It will remain in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday unless testing indicates that bacterial numbers persist in excess of New York State standards.
The health department says the 47 beaches are directly impacted by nearby storm water discharges.
The beaches are located within and adjacent to several North Shore embayment: Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington Harbor and Bay, Centerport Harbor, Northport Harbor and Northport Bay, Port Jefferson Harbor, and Stony Brook Harbor.
For the latest information on the effected beaches, the public can call 631-852-5822.
