ACS offers tips on putting infants to sleep

Blankets, pillows, stuffed animals - it all seems like a cozy way to sleep for babies. The Administration for Children's Services says putting your infants to sleep like this could be deadly.

"Babies are vulnerable," said Assistant Commissioner Michele May. "They're very young and can get into situations where they're venerable."

Since the 90's, May says ACS has been educating parents about sleep safety for our borough's toddlers. Every year, about 40 babies die across NYC from sleep-related injuries that ACS says are mostly preventable.

"Things that make sleep comfortable for us are dangerous for children," she said. Blankets, pillows, yes, even the teddy bear can be a suffocation hazard for babies. When in doubt, ACS says to follow the ABCs.

Keep you baby Alone on his or her Back and in a Crib when sleeping, even during the winter.

"Use a sleep sack," said Commissioner Jess Dannhauser. "There are other ways to keep you baby warm."

Dannhauser encourages parents to visit the administration's safe sleep website and sign up for webinar demonstrations.
