A Sept. 11 first responder and former New York City police officer from Floral Park is suffering from a rare kidney disease and looking for a donor.
Daniel O'Shea spent months at Ground Zero for search and rescue operations after the terror attacks on the World Trade Center back in 2001. O'Shea was diagnosed in 2003 with a degenerative kidney disease that has no known cure. His doctors say it's linked to his work on the pile.
O'Shea is desperately seeking a donor and has started handing out fliers in his community. He's looking for someone with type O blood to donate a kidney at the North Shore LIJ Transplant Center.
O'Shea say his insurance covers his medical bills, but he and his wife are concerned about how much time he has left.
Feal Good Foundation founder John Feal says more than 50 types of cancer were included in the James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act to cover first responders' medical costs, but kidney disease was not.
