Four people, including an infant, were in critical condition Saturday after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning in a Hempstead home occupied by 11 people.
Two adults and one child were admitted to the intensive care unit at Nassau University Medical Center and are now in critical but stable condition. A newborn child, meanwhile, was transferred to Winthrop University Hospital in critical condition.
Authorities say the Wellington Street home is an illegal boarding house, and fire officials are investigating who owns the home and who repaired the oil burner that leaked poisonous fumes into the house.
Hempstead Fire Chief Michael Charles says there are no working smoke or carbon monoxide detectors in the home and that the house is subdivided dangerously and illegally.
Fire officials shut down the house on April 10, and residents are now living with friends and family.
