Volunteer fire departments across the Hudson Valley opened their doors this weekend, inviting residents to get a firsthand look at what it takes to serve.

At the Chappaqua Fire Department, live training exercises gave visitors a taste of the action — from locating a fire to putting water on the flames. Fire officials say hands-on demonstrations are one of the most effective ways to attract new recruits.

Volunteer firefighter numbers are at a 40-year low, according to the Firefighters Association of the State of New York. In Westchester County alone, there are 58 fire departments — most of them volunteer-based — and all are in need of new members.

Chief Paul Eiden says the role comes with both responsibility and reward, noting firefighters receive professional-level training and strong community support.

Some who attended, like Adam Gonthier, say volunteering offers a meaningful break from their daily routines.

“I spend all day on Excel spreadsheets. This is an opportunity to do something a little more physical. Get out in the real world and do something that's beneficial as well as can be fun at time….don't be shy about going back to unstick something.”

Others — including former volunteers — are considering returning to service.

Departments emphasize that training is flexible, making it accessible for people from all walks of life.
