A teen is dead after being pulled from the water off Shelter Island on Saturday afternoon.
Timothy Magambo, 18, of Pelham, NY, was visiting the area with friends when the group decided to go swimming around 3 p.m., according to police.
Magambo was with seven other people who all entered the water and intended to travel across the channel from Wades Beach to Shell Beach, a nearby peninsula directly across the water.
Shelter Island police tell News 12, during the swim, the victim became separated from the group and tried to turn around to swim back to Wades Beach.
The other members of the group found Magambo face down in the water and brought him back to shore where lifesaving measures were initiated by police, fire and EMS personnel.
He was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he succumbed to injuries consistent with drowning, police say.
The Medical Examiner's office will determine the cause of death, but it is believed to be accidental in nature and no criminality is suspected at this time.
