The New York Blood Center hosted a blood drive in memory of Thomas P. McCarthy, former Massapequa Fire Department captain and commissioner.

McCarthy was a lifelong blood donor and Massapequa resident who died earlier this month. Those who knew him say that he dedicated his life to helping others.

"That was his life, helping people. Whether it was donating blood, helping charities, [or] running a charity. That was Tom," said Thomas Pendergast, the former Massapequa Fire Department chief.

The McCarthy family is asking for blood donations in lieu of flowers.

The New York Blood Center is accepting donations in McCarthy's honor at their Massapequa donor site through Tuesday, May 5.
