Acceptance: The snow in Yonkers is not going anywhere for a while

Yonkers residents say they're coming to terms with the fact that snow has become their new normal, at least for now.

It has also brought many inconveniences. Steven Singer has lived in Yonkers for nearly 50 years. He, like many others, spent the day of the snowstorm outside every couple hours to shovel.

Singer says he didn't have an issue until crews came to clear his street. He says they left a mound of snow blocking his driveway. That mound of snow is now primarily ice.

"I'm 77 years old. I always take an aspirin before I shovel just to play it safe, but this will probably do me in if I try to shovel this out. And where would I put it?" said Singer.

Singer said he made numerous calls to city officials. A city spokesperson told News 12 that Mayor Mike Spano has directed DPW crews to first focus on clearing the 11 emergency routes. According to the spokesperson, those roads remain the priority as they serve as main corridors for the city.

Another resident says it's been a never-ending battle to find parking.

"Every time I come home from work, it's very hard to find a parking spot. You have to dig in to get a parking spot, and then you have to dig out when you want to get out again," said Yonkers resident John Cranny.

He says that the crews have done the best they can, given the amount of snow we got – and made sure to get a good shovel.

"I don't have one of those plastic shovels. So, this one is good for breaking the ice. But it still takes time," said Cranny.

On Monday, the city announced that crews will be focusing on Bronx River Road on Tuesday. Alternate side street parking will be suspended, except on Bronx River Road.
