After 44 years of service, the Garden City police commissioner is announcing his retirement.
Commissioner Kenneth O. Jackson’s final day on the job will be Jan. 31.
Jackson's career began as a patrol officer with New York City Transit Police Department.
He then joined the Garden City Police Department in June 1985.
Rising through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant and inspector, Jackson reached the role of commissioner in 2012.
Beyond Garden City, he’s the executive rirector of the Nassau County Municipal Police Chiefs Association, and a member of both the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board and the Board of Governors for the New York State Police Chiefs.
"It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve this community and to work alongside the brave men and women of the Garden City Police Department. I leave knowing that the Department is in strong hands,” Jackson says.
A formal walkout ceremony will be held on Jan. 30 at police headquarters.
