Frigid temperatures cause water main breaks across Long Island

The bitter blast of cold air caused water mains to break across Long Island Wednesday.
Officials say a water main break flooded several streets in Lindenhurst in the area of Jackson Avenue between 42nd and 43rd streets.
Crews worked all morning to pump the water out of the area. One worker said off camera that he hasn’t dealt with a flood like this from a water main break in his 20 years on the job.
The Suffolk County Water Authority said crews were notified about the water main break around 6 a.m., and the water was shut off, impacting eight homes.
One homeowner on the block said they haven't seen anything like this in her almost 50 years of living here.
“It’s a lake out here,” said Dorian Kristiansen, of Lindenhurst. "I just went out and put this light on, oh my gosh, you see where the water is right there. But it's fine they're fixing it now."
In Nassau, a water main break in Freeport shut down Bayview Avenue School. There's no word yet from the district whether students will return to school tomorrow.
Another water main broke on Southside Avenue in West Islip, sending water gushing down the block and leaving an icy mess in its aftermath
Frank Raia, of West Islip, said a neighbor noticed an issue before sunrise Wednesday morning.
"Around like 5 am, we had a neighbor notice that we had some gushing water," he said. "It's a cold one so you gotta expect some curveballs coming our way."
The CEO of the Suffolk County Water Authority said it is not a concern that homeowners’ pipes may freeze after the water main break. He said the breaks are likely caused by the frigid temperatures.
"We probably have a few feet onto the grass-line of water, all the way up the driveway,” said Raia. “The street was like well [under] a foot of water."
The water main in West Islip has been fixed and neighbors tell News 12 they got water service restored to them around noon Wednesday.
