An NYPD K-9 named after former Long Island detective Steven McDonald recently died.

McDonald was paralyzed after being shot in 1986 by a suspect in Central Park. He died in 2017 due to respiratory complications resulting from being on a ventilator. Steven the K-9 was given his name 11 days after McDonald passed.

“It's definitely a piece of my father that we that we lost because K-9 Steven was named after him," said Lt. Conor McDonald, his son. "But there's many other people within our family, outside our family and on the job that keep my father's name alive,” he said.
