People voted Tuesday to approve a budget increase for the Wyandanch Public Library.

A state audit in 2014 raised concerns over the library's ability to prevent wasteful spending and fraud.

Newly appointed library director Jessica Oelcher, who has been on the job for less than two months, is aware of the library's history, but also says she is ready to pave the way for a brighter future.

"This year we're looking to increase programs and services to the community from birth all the way up to seniors, we're looking to enhance our materials collection and we're looking to make improvements to our facility," Oelcher says.

Some Wyandanch residents were also willing to vote yes for a budget increase for the Wyandanch Public Library, despite its troubled past.

Jarod Morris, of Wyandanch, says he has already seen improvements in the library.

"Now it's time that the community does invest in this library," Morris says.

There were 125 votes to increase the library budgets compared to 53 votes not to increase it.
