1 dead, 1 critical after boat crashes into channel marker in Barnegat Bay

One person has died and another remains hospitalized after being ejected from a boat that struck a channel marker in Barnegat Bay Monday.

According to New Jersey State Police, troopers responded to the location around 5:45 p.m. after a single vessel struck a day marker in the bay near Long Beach Island. Officers learned that two occupants were ejected from the boat as a result of the crash.

On Wednesday, state police confirmed that one of a victims, identified as Gunnar Pearson, 28, of Barnegat, had succumbed to his injuries.

Immediately following the crash, police said both ejected occupants were transported to an area hospital and were in critical condition.

"The four other occupants on board the vessel were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries," state police said.

Police do not yet know what circumstances led to the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
