As Republicans across Washington, D.C. have distanced themselves from President Donald Trump in the wake of the chaos at the U.S. Capitol, all but one member on Long Island's delegation in the House voted to affirm Joe Biden as the next president.
Of the five people who represent Nassau and Suffolk in the House, only one voted to object to the electoral results -- Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin. Zeldin has been a strong supporter of Trump and a large portion of his district is in the Town of Brookhaven, which is also very pro-Trump.
The only other Republican congressman from Long Island is Andrew Garbarino of Sayville, who has only been in the House for less than a week, replacing Rep. Peter King. He voted to affirm the voting results.
"A lot of people were under pressure to make the right decision. I know what I thought the right decision was, but I know lots of other members of Congress who were on the opposite side who voted to object who thought that was the right decision," says Garbarino.
"Many of my constituents have been outraged and demanded that I voice their objections," said Zeldin earlier this week.
There has been plenty of criticism of Zeldin for his vote, especially since it happened right after the violent clashes by pro-Trump supporters at the Capitol.
Zeldin released a statement Wednesday, saying, "There will be a peaceful transition of power on Jan. 20, 2021. Launching a whole new impeachment process next week days before the inauguration is not the best path forward."
