Wyndham Clark was heading toward a possible historic collapse in the final round of the U.S. Open in Southampton on Sunday.

Starting off six shots ahead, Clark found himself battling most of the day but was able to hold on for a single-shot victory over opponent Sam Burns.

The now two-time U.S. Open champion became the first wire-to-wire winner since 2014 with the victory at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Just four years ago, Clark won the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.

The Shinnecock gallery had been rooting against him all day, throwing their support behind Scottie Scheffler, who was playing for his bid for the career Grand Slam, and on his birthday no less.

“New York didn't really like me - I love you guys,” Clark said at the closing ceremony, “But I get it. Some of it’s self-deserved.”

“Grand Slams only happen a few times. He’s going to get it. He’s the best player in the world. But today, it’s my day,” he added.

The tournament returned to the East End for the first time since 2018, famously remembered for its brutal course conditions.
