Gusting winds and heavy rains pounded parts of Long Island Friday, downing trees and stranding drivers.
Fast-forming floods left vehicles under water and fallen power lines knocked out power for hundreds of residents, many who claim to have seen a tornado. Police were forced to direct traffic at heavy intersections using flairs after outages affected traffic signals on Sunrise Highway.
Long Island Rail Road service was halted on the Mineola line for a half-hour, while the Nassau University Medical Center was forced to divert emergency calls for 20 minutes due to flooding. The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Massapequa.
