Deer Park Avenue reopened at 7:45 a.m. after a pair of crashes shut the road down in both directions south of the train station between Grand Boulevard and Lake Avenue in Deer Park around 3:40 a.m.
Suffolk County police said the first crash happened near Grand Boulevard. Exclusive surveillance video obtained by News 12 showed the two cars colliding near the intersection at 3:40 a.m.
One car was heavily damaged in the middle of Deer Park Avenue, and the other was smashed up against the sign for a gas station at the intersection after tumbling over multiple times.
Minutes later, a Suffolk County police officer in a marked vehicle responding to the initial crash collided with a 1997 Ford van at the intersection of Deer Park and Lake avenues at 3:51 a.m., according to officials.
Officials said the police car had activated its lights and sirens and was traveling southbound toward the crash while the van was traveling eastbound.
Both drivers were the only ones in their respective cars. The two men were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with injuries not considered life-threatening.
Officers from the Suffolk County Police Crime Scene Unit were taking pictures and collecting evidence throughout the morning.
Officials have not yet released additional information about the initial crash.
