Tuesday night's wild weather not only wreaked havoc across Long Island but caused major problems for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) commuters.
LIRR officials say lightning struck a high-tension pole and snapped it causing it to dangle over tracks near the Merrillon Avenue Station. MTA and LIPA crews were able to suspend the pole for rush hour, but commuters faced up to 45-minute delays on the Main Line.
Work crews fixed the pole in time for the evening commute, but a disabled track car near South Hampton continues to cause delays on the Montauk branch.
