West Islip parents are speaking out today about a plan to close some of their schools.

Parents packed a school board meeting last night at West Islip High School.

Many parents say they are upset over a proposal to close two district elementary schools and consolidate middle schools.

The district blames declining enrollment and lack of funds. There is no word yet on which schools are slated to be shut down. Officials hope to have a decision by January. In addition, parents in the North Bellmore district are upset over a proposal to close Gunther Elementary School.

The district hopes the move will save a million dollars.A citizen's advisory committee says it selected Gunther Elementary School because it is the smallest in the district.
