Hundreds attended the 31st annual West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island’s clam shucking contest at the Bay Shore Marina.
The event raised money for the coalition, which provides financial assistance, meals and even transportation for those battling breast cancer.
Survivor Theresa Seidler said that it’s important for people to know that the coalition is out there helping people every day.
The coalition was founded more than 30 years ago by survivor Lorraine Pace.
She said back then, people wouldn’t even use the word “breast” in public.
She told News 12, “It’s about time people acknowledge that it’s here.”
The winner of the clam shucking contest was Juan Rosales, of Bay Shore.
