A wake was held Sunday for a late Center Moriches man worked for the NYPD and was one of the many first responders to rush toward ground zero on Sept. 11, 2001.
Earlier this month, Joseph Stillitano was brought home for hospice care surrounded by his family, friends and fellow officers.
Stillitano battled terminal cancer and died on March 21.
His three kids shared their gratitude for everyone who attended Sunday's ceremony.
"Everyone that walked through those doors today, it's a true sentiment of how he shared so much love with everybody," said Danielle Kirschenheiter, daughter of Stillitano.
A funeral mass will be held for Stillitano on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. John The Evangelist Church in Center Moriches.
