A gunman opened fire Monday morning killing dozens on the Virginia Tech campus before killing himself.
Authorities say the massacre is the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history. School officials say the gunman killed 32 people and then turned the gun on himself. Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said, ?I?m really at a loss to explain or to understand the carnage that has visited our campus.?
Many students from Long Island attend Virginia Tech. The shooting has led to many anxious parents at home. Junior Justin Lerner, of Plainview, said though he lives off campus, he knows someone who was shot in the rampage. Lerner adds that soon after the shooting he called home to let his family know he was not hurt.
Authorities in Virginia have not yet released the names of the victims or the shooter. Meanwhile, students are complaining they received an e-mail notification of the shooting two hours after the first shots rang out.
