Students with the Kings Park High School marching band say a long‑awaited trip to Orlando ended in disappointment after their flight was canceled at the last minute.
The band and their parent association were scheduled to leave Saturday morning for Florida. Students and chaperones arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport to fly with Delta Air Lines, but parents say they were told the flight had been canceled. What followed, according to parents, was hours of confusion and uncertainty inside the airport.
Parents say they spent 13 hours at JFK trying to secure seats on another flight, unsure whether the students would make it to Orlando at all.
“It was very stressful. Very anxiety‑building,” said student Jessica DiSalvio. “We were in an airport for 13 hours and didn’t know when we were leaving. If we were leaving. If we were going to stay in the airport all night. If we were going home.”
For many students, the trip was something they had been looking forward to for months, making the uncertainty especially overwhelming. While parents say they were told the cost of the canceled flight would be refunded, they are concerned about other expenses that may not be recovered.
“There’s a lot of other money involved,” said parent Patrick Corbett. “You’ve got the hotels, the bus and everything else that the kids pay for, so we’ll see.”
News 12 reached out to Delta Air Lines for comment and was directed back to the school for information. The district has not yet provided additional details. News 12 also contacted Kaleidoscope Adventures, the booking agency that helped coordinate the trip, and is awaiting a response.
