A Hempstead teen is facing charges for allegedly causing a crash that killed his mother. Police say 17-year-old Oscar Garcia was driving without a license around 8:30 Thursday night. According to police, after making a left turn onto Robson Place, Garcia failed to stop for a motorcycle that was coming toward him on Fulton Avenue.
The motorcycle hit the passenger side of the car, launching the bike and its two riders through the air, according to police.
Garcia's 44-year-old mother, Maria, was transported to Nassau University Medical Center. The mother of three was pronounced dead at approximately 10 p.m.
Friends say what makes the tragedy especially heartbreaking is the tight relationship the teen had with his mother.
"They would do everything together - go out and eat go to the park just have fun,? friend Yuris Guerrero says.
The two motorcycle riders, who are from Brooklyn, were taken to Winthrop University Hospital. The passenger is listed in fair condition. There is no word on the driver?s condition.
Garcia was charged with reckless driving and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle for driving without a license and reckless endangerment. He is due in court Monday.
