Hundreds packed a Board of Education meeting Wednesday night, demanding answers as the South Country Central School District considers cutting 55 positions.

Last year, the district already cut 53 jobs and revealed it had overspent by nearly $3.5 million in the 2024-2025 school year.

The proposed cuts would include 43 teachers and five administrators. Officials say the move is part of a plan to close a budget gap that could reach $15 million by 2027.

Superintendent Antonio Santana said the district is working to reduce spending, improve efficiencies, and strengthen long-term financial planning. “We’re implementing internal measures… so that we’re not in this position again,” he said.

Students and parents spoke out about the potential impact. A second-grade student asked, “Does my future matter to you?” during the public discussion. Another shared that a teacher stayed after school to help him prepare for his science exam, even knowing his job was at risk.

No final decisions were made Wednesday. Three more meetings are scheduled in April as the community pushes for alternatives before the budget vote.
