Hofstra professors are threatening to walk off the job Monday if the university doesn’t come to a contract resolution.
A looming strike at the university in Hempstead could cause a major setback to students who begin classes on Aug. 31.
The Hofstra chapter of the American Association of University Professors voted last month to allow for the strike if they didn’t reach a compromise.
The AAUP says that professors are petitioning for better pay and affordable health care.
In a statement provided to News 12 on Friday, they asserted that they want to reach a fair deal and avoid the strike.
“It is an option faculty members do not want to take. They want to be in their classrooms teaching, mentoring and working directly with students,” it read in part.
